MWC 2025: Honor joins the 7 Years Update club with Magic 7 Pro

Samsung and Google have historically been the sole prominent Android brands providing seven years of both platform and security updates.

The trend was initiated by Samsung with the launch of the Galaxy S24 series and subsequently adopted by Google with the Pixel 8 lineup. Despite the passage of time, no other manufacturers have matched this level of commitment—until recently.

During MWC 2025, Honor declared its intention to offer seven years of Android updates and security patches for its Magic series, beginning with devices available in European markets.

Magic 7 Pro is the First Honor Phone to Get 7 Years of Updates

The Honor Magic 7 Pro will be the inaugural device to take advantage of this enhanced support. Upon its launch in Europe this January, the phone was initially guaranteed five years of updates. However, with Honor’s recent policy revision, the device is now set to receive updates until 2032—or Android 22, assuming Google maintains its annual update schedule.

Honor has stated that this extended commitment is part of its Honor Alpha Plan, a new initiative aimed at evolving the company from a smartphone manufacturer into a comprehensive AI-driven device ecosystem.

“We strive to deliver devices and services that not only meet consumer expectations but exceed them,” remarked Honor CEO James Li in a press release. “This is why we have chosen to provide seven years of Android OS and security updates for the Honor Magic series.”

In addition to enhancing software longevity, Honor emphasizes that this initiative contributes to sustainability efforts, aiming to minimize e-waste by ensuring devices remain relevant for an extended period.

While the Magic 7 Pro is the first to benefit from this initiative, Honor has confirmed that the change will also extend to other flagship models and foldable devices. However, it is important to note that the Magic Lite series will not be part of the extended support program.

With Honor enhancing its software update offerings, it will be intriguing to observe whether other Android manufacturers will adopt similar practices.
