Xiaomi officially launched its innovative modular optical system at MWC 2025, featuring a customized version of the Xiaomi 15 equipped with a detachable 35mm lens. This pioneering approach to mobile photography provides the smartphone with DSLR-like flexibility while maintaining its compact design.
The modular optical system incorporates a modified Xiaomi 15 that utilizes a magnetic attachment mechanism, enabling users to easily connect a high-performance camera module. In contrast to conventional clip-on lenses, Xiaomi’s design integrates seamlessly with the device’s hardware, offering an experience comparable to that of a built-in camera. The system employs Xiaomi’s proprietary LaserLink technology, facilitating near-instant data transfer and eliminating any lag during the capture of high-resolution images.

At its heart, the system features a 100MP Micro Four Thirds (M4/3) sensor, which is significantly larger than typical smartphone sensors, resulting in superior image quality and improved dynamic range. It is paired with a 35mm all-aspherical glass lens that boasts a wide aperture, ensuring outstanding low-light performance and precise control over depth of field. Additionally, the lens is equipped with a built-in autofocus motor for tap-to-focus capabilities and a physical focus ring for manual adjustments.
Similar to Apple’s MagSafe accessories, the Xiaomi modular lens system attaches magnetically to the rear of the device. Once connected, users can toggle between standard and modular camera modes within the Xiaomi Camera app. The system also supports RAW image capture, catering to professional photographers who require extensive post-processing options.
Xiaomi is not alone in exploring modular optics. At MWC 2025, Realme unveiled its Interchangeable-Lens Concept, featuring a 1-inch customized Sony sensor and a proprietary lens mount. Demonstrated with 73mm portrait and 234mm telephoto lenses, this system aims to expand the possibilities of mobile imaging, although it remains in the prototype stage for the time being.
Xiaomi introduced the Xiaomi 15 Ultra Photography Kit Legend Edition at the event, priced at €199. This kit provides DSLR-like controls and includes a USB-C camera grip equipped with a detachable shutter button, dials for adjusting exposure, ISO, and white balance, a zoom lever, and a 2,000mAh battery to ensure prolonged usage.
