Google is introducing an exciting update to its Find My Device app, allowing users to see the real-time locations of friends and family who have chosen to share their whereabouts. According to 9to5Google, this enhancement builds on the Android March feature drop and is gradually being rolled out to a wider audience.
One Map, Two Purposes
While Google Maps previously enabled location sharing among friends and family, the Find My Device app now merges device tracking with people tracking, offering a more streamlined experience. Additionally, it displays the locations of friends using Google Maps on iOS, enhancing cross-platform functionality.
Android users will find a new “People” tab in the Find My Device app. By selecting this tab, they can view the locations of contacts who are sharing their location with them. Another tab provides information on the individuals with whom you are sharing your location, along with options to manage or adjust the duration of that sharing.
Inspired by Apple
With this update, the interface of Google’s Find My Device app closely mirrors that of Apple’s Find My app. The revamped design features a split-screen view, showcasing a map at the top and a list of people or devices at the bottom, depending on the selected tab. This layout simplifies the process of switching between tracking lost devices and keeping tabs on loved ones.
Overall, this update enhances the functionality of the Find My Device app, transforming it from a tool for locating lost phones or gadgets into a comprehensive hub for personal location sharing and tracking.
