OpenAI Introduces GPT 4.1 As the Better and More Affordable Successor

OpenAI has officially unveiled GPT-4.1, the next iteration following last year’s GPT-4o multimodal AI model. This new version was introduced during a live stream on Monday, where several key enhancements were showcased, such as a larger context window and improved performance in coding and instruction-following tasks.

GPT-4.1 Key Features

GPT-4.1 aims to provide substantial upgrades over its predecessor, particularly with its ability to manage up to 1 million tokens of context, far exceeding the 128,000-token limit of GPT-4o. This increase allows GPT-4.1 to process a greater volume of input, including text, images, and videos, leading to more complex and accurate responses.

OpenAI claims that GPT-4.1 is not only more dependable than GPT-4o for both long and short context lengths but also excels at filtering out irrelevant information. These advancements position GPT-4.1 as a more robust choice for a variety of applications, especially those involving extensive data analysis or complex reasoning.

More Affordable Models

In addition to the flagship GPT-4.1 model, OpenAI has also introduced two smaller versions aimed at developers looking for more affordable options:

  • GPT-4.1 Mini: A budget-friendly model for developers who want to experiment with the new features without breaking the bank.
  • GPT-4.1 Nano: The smallest, fastest, and cheapest model, designed for efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

These smaller models are designed to bring GPT-4.1’s advancements to a broader audience, especially those who need lighter, faster models for specific tasks.

Cost and Efficiency

Additionally, GPT-4.1 is priced 26% lower than GPT-4o, making it a more budget-friendly option for developers and businesses. The launch of these models coincides with OpenAI’s efforts to remain competitive in the fast-changing AI landscape, particularly in light of DeepSeek’s ultra-efficient AI model, which has established a new standard for efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Phasing Out of GPT-4 and GPT-4.5

As OpenAI progresses with GPT-4.1, the company intends to retire the GPT-4 model by April 30th, 2025, and the GPT-4.5 preview in the API will also be phased out on July 14th, 2025, as GPT-4.1 provides superior performance at a lower cost and with reduced latency.

Upcoming Models

Even with the release of GPT-4.1, OpenAI is already setting its sights on future models, with GPT-5, initially anticipated for May 2025, facing delays due to challenges in seamless technology integration. In the meantime, OpenAI is also preparing for the full release of its o3 reasoning model and the o4 mini reasoning model, with these expected to debut soon.
