The Power Division is working on a “Surplus Power Package” to help industrial and agricultural users. It also aims to include crypto mining and AI data centers.
This plan was shared in writing with the Senate Standing Committee on Power during its meeting on May 23, 2025. The session was led by Senator Mohsin Aziz.
However, the committee did not discuss the plan in detail. This was because Federal Minister for Power Sardar Awais Leghari and senior officials from PPMC and CPPA-G were absent. They were attending a meeting with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The Power Division states that the package is designed to be subsidy-neutral. It would give targeted users a rate of 8–9 cents per unit for extra electricity they consume.
New industries like crypto mining and data centers are expected to gain from reduced rates for all their power use. This depends on the final conditions and rules. The package is planned to cover the next three years.
