WhatsApp has introduced a new feature called Message Summaries that uses AI to help users quickly review unread messages. The tool takes advantage of Meta AI to create short summaries of chat conversations, making it easier to catch up on large group chats.
How the Feature Works
When you click on the unread message count in any chat, WhatsApp displays a list of key points from recent messages. These summaries are created locally with Meta’s Private Processing technology, which aims to protect user privacy. WhatsApp states that neither Meta nor WhatsApp can see the original messages or the summaries. Other participants in the chat also cannot access your summaries.
Here is what it looks like in action.

The Message Summaries feature is optional and off by default. You can turn it on in the Advanced Chat Privacy settings. There, you can also select which chats are eligible for AI-generated summaries.
Current Limitations
Currently, the feature is only available in the United States and supports English. WhatsApp has said it will roll out to more regions and languages later this year. Pakistani users will need to wait a bit longer as the feature expands gradually.
