Elon Musk announced today that hashtags will no longer be used in ads on X, the platform formerly called Twitter. This change starts on Friday and affects only paid posts. Regular updates will stay the same.
In a separate message, Musk called hashtags an “esthetic nightmare,” saying removing them will make ads look cleaner. He has long criticized hashtags, calling them “ugly” and outdated.
AI to Handle Content Discovery
This move follows Musk’s December 2024 comments urging users to stop using hashtags altogether. He explained that X’s AI tools, like the Grok chatbot from xAI, can identify and organize content without hashtags. He believes this makes manual tags unnecessary.
Hashtags first appeared on Twitter in 2007 to help group conversations and highlight popular topics. Removing them from ads marks a big shift from one of the platform’s most recognizable features. Since Musk took over, X has moved toward algorithms that suggest content and cleaner visuals, with less focus on manual tagging.
