Xiaomi 17 Launched As the 1st Phone With Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 at $630

Xiaomi has officially unveiled the Xiaomi 17, the first smartphone to feature the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset. Alongside this performance leap, the device features a massive 7,000 mAh battery, faster charging, and a refined design. These updates place the Xiaomi 17 among the most advanced flagship devices of 2025.

For now, the phone has only been launched in China, with a global rollout expected later.

Design and Display

The Xiaomi 17 carries a flat aluminum frame and an IP68 rating, ensuring protection against both dust and water. On the front, the phone is equipped with a 6.3-inch LTPO OLED display, offering a resolution of 1,220 x 2,656 pixels and a dynamic refresh rate that ranges from 1Hz to 120Hz.

The panel delivers peak brightness levels of up to 3,500 nits and is reinforced with Xiaomi Dragon Crystal Glass. Bezels have been reduced to just 1.18mm on all four sides, giving the phone a bezel-less look. The ultrasonic fingerprint scanner is a cut above the optical kind, offering more consistent and faster unlocks. Buyers will be able to choose from four color options: black, white, blue, and pink, at least in China.

Internals and Software

At its core, the Xiaomi 17 is powered by Qualcomm’s latest and greatest Android chip, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, paired with a 4,497mm² vapor chamber to manage heat and maintain sustained performance during demanding tasks such as gaming. The phone is available in two configurations: 12GB or 16GB of RAM, with storage options of 256GB and 512GB.

Out of the box, it runs on HyperOS 3, Xiaomi’s latest operating system, which has been designed to deliver fluid performance while integrating seamlessly with the broader Xiaomi ecosystem.

Cameras

The rear camera setup consists of three sensors. The primary camera is a 50MP unit equipped with a 1/1.31-inch Light Hunter 950 sensor and a 23mm equivalent lens with an f/1.67 aperture. This is accompanied by a 50MP ultrawide lens with a 17mm equivalent focal length and a 50MP telephoto lens capable of 2.6x optical zoom at a 60mm equivalent focal length. On the front, Xiaomi has introduced an upgraded 50MP selfie camera, ensuring greater detail and improved results across different lighting conditions.

Battery and Pricing

Perhaps one of the most appealing features of the Xiaomi 17 is its giant 7,000 mAh silicon-carbon battery, which incorporates up to 16% silicon content for improved efficiency. Charging is equally impressive, with support for 100W wired fast charging, 50W wireless charging, and 22.5W reverse wireless charging.

In terms of pricing, the Xiaomi 17 begins at roughly $630 for the 12GB RAM and 256GB storage model. The 12GB RAM and 512GB storage version is priced at about $672, while the top-tier 16GB RAM and 512GB storage configuration costs about $700.

Keep in mind that these are Chinese price tags and international pricing will vary, as always.
