Senate IT Committee to Review Rising Mobile Data and Call Rates

On December 9, a crucial meeting has been scheduled by the Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunications to investigate the significant rise in mobile data and call package rates.

The committee asked the Ministry of Information Technology for a comprehensive explanation of the most recent tariff increases and the measures taken to protect consumer rights.

The Minister for IT and Telecom will provide the committee with a comprehensive update on the pricing actions taken by mobile operators and the regulatory response to public complaints, as stated in the meeting notice.

A discussion of Senator Atta ur Rehman’s concern regarding the suspension of mobile services in District Lakki Marwat is also included on the agenda.

The Interior Ministry and the Islamabad administration have been summoned to explain how the ICT Household Survey app stores the data it collects, who has access to it, and the security measures in place.

The E tag users’ real-time data protection measures and Islamabad’s vehicle monitoring system will be covered in a separate briefing.

Additionally, the committee will investigate media-reported Rs-related allegations. 1.5 million dollars in bribes per month, allegedly taken from illegal call centers by National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency personnel.

The Director General NCCIA has been asked to explain internal controls and actions taken so far.

The names, designations, meeting frequency, and compensation of Ufone’s Board of Directors over the past two years will be investigated further by legislators.

It has been given to the Chairman of the PTA to inform the committee about the licensing requirements for Virtual Private Networks and the upcoming procedure that businesses must follow to obtain VPN permissions.

A compliance report on mobile coverage issues raised by parliamentarians will also be presented by the Universal Service Fund’s CEO.

These issues include complaints about mobile coverage from the Sukkur Karachi M-9, the N-5 highway, several Balochistan districts, Umerkot, Abbottabad, and Kashmore.
