ChatGPT’s Image Generator Just Got a Big Upgrade to Take On Google’s Nano Banana

With the launch of the redesigned ChatGPT Images, OpenAI has announced a significant update to its image generation tool. This release follows closely on the heels of the GPT-5.2 release. The updated system delivers significantly faster image generation and more precise editing to take on Google’s Nano Banana Pro, much like GPT-5.2 targets Gemini 3 Pro.

The new ChatGPT Images, according to OpenAI, can produce images up to four times faster than before. The company said the updated model follows user instructions more accurately, especially during edits, and applies only the requested changes while keeping the rest of the image consistent across multiple edits.

When users request modifications, this enhancement, according to OpenAI, enables the tool to better preserve image details, relationships between elements, and the original structure.

The updated image model is designed to handle more complex edits, including adding, removing, blending, combining, and rearranging elements without altering unrelated parts of an image. According to OpenAI, this enables both practical edits and visual reworks that are more expressive.

Users of ChatGPT Images can now select from a variety of creative concepts and preset styles without having to write a prompt. The model also enhances text rendering and is more effective at generating images with numerous small faces, areas that have traditionally been challenging for image generation systems.

OpenAI said the new ChatGPT Images feature is rolling out globally and will be available to all users.
