Apple will change how it names its major operating systems, reports Bloomberg. Instead of updating only the version number, Apple will name them by the year. These future updates will be labeled with the year following their release, similar to how cars are numbered. For example, the next big iOS update will be called iOS 26, not iOS 19. Bloomberg also mentions that iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS will adopt the same naming pattern, becoming versions 26.
Apple plans to announce this change at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) starting June 9. The goal is to make software version numbers clearer and more consistent. Currently, Apple’s naming system is inconsistent, with labels like iOS 18, watchOS 12, and visionOS 2.
In addition to the name changes, Apple is expected to reveal a new design inspired by the Vision Pro’s visionOS during WWDC. The event begins with a keynote on June 9 at 1 PM Eastern Time.
