The ChatGPT app dominates the AI assistant market. According to a new report from Appfigures, the app’s downloads and revenue have increased significantly this year. Since its launch in May 2023, the data indicate that ChatGPT has generated $2 billion in global consumer spending on iOS and Android. ChatGPT’s revenue increased by 673 percent year-over-year in 2025, making it a particularly successful year. As a result, ChatGPT is now the most popular AI assistant app worldwide.
ChatGPT App Sees 673% Revenue Surge in 2025, Leads Global AI Market
Downloads as well as revenue are experiencing growth. The app has been downloaded 318 million times this year. This figure is 2.8 times higher than the same period last year, showing how quickly users are adopting the technology.
India currently holds the record for most lifetime installs, accounting for 13.7% of all downloads. With 10.3%, the United States comes in second. However, the situation is very different when it comes to spending. U.S. users are responsible for nearly 40% of ChatGPT’s total revenue to date. The average download cost in the United States is around $10, which is significantly more than in other regions. With only 5.3% of total revenue, Germany ranks second in terms of spending.
ChatGPT also leads the pack when comparing revenue per install across AI apps. The worldwide average lifetime revenue per install is $2.91. In contrast, Microsoft’s Copilot costs just $0.27, Elon Musk’s Grok costs $2.55, and Anthropic’s Claude costs $2.55. These figures demonstrate how effectively ChatGPT turns downloads into actual revenue.
Part of Grok’s slower sales can be partially attributed to the app’s late launch on mobile platforms. Even though AI launched Grok in November 2023, the company only released apps for iOS and Android in January 2025 and March 2025, respectively. This delay gave ChatGPT a big head start in capturing users and building a strong revenue base.
The report comes just a few days after Elon Musk claimed that Apple favors OpenAI. Musk said that no other chatbot could top the App Store charts because of Apple’s alleged bias. Nevertheless, the data of today present a different picture. Even Grok acknowledged that the claim is invalid.
ChatGPT has made $1.35 billion from mobile sales alone in 2025. That’s 53 times more than Grok, which sits in second place with $25.6 million. There is a significant gap between the amount of money users are willing to spend and the number of downloads.
ChatGPT’s success stands out because of its consistent expansion. Due to its user-friendly features, dependable performance, and strong brand recognition, it has maintained its lead over rivals. The app’s value to users is evident, and they are willing to pay for it.
