Customs officials at Allama Iqbal International Airport have confiscated 95 valuable smartphones, valued at millions of rupees, from a passenger arriving from Sharjah. The devices were found in the luggage of Mumtaz Muzaffar, a Sialkot resident, who arrived on flight 501-9P of a private airline last night.
A customs spokesperson reported that the operation was initiated following a tip-off to Collector Customs Taiba Kiani. The passenger has been taken into custody, and legal action has been initiated against him. This incident serves as a cautionary tale for others considering smuggling, as authorities are intensifying their monitoring and enforcement efforts.
In recent months, there have been numerous significant seizures of smuggled items, including electronics and luxury goods, as authorities work diligently to combat smuggling and safeguard local industries.
Earlier this year, customs officials at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport intercepted a substantial shipment of counterfeit electronics, highlighting the difficulties faced by authorities in managing the flow of goods that evade legal regulations. Such operations are vital not only for protecting revenue but also for ensuring consumer safety, as smuggled products often fail to meet safety standards.
