Elon Musk’s xAI unveils Grok 3, Most Advanced AI Model, Grok 3 vs GPT-5

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has launched its latest flagship AI model, Grok 3. The announcement, made late on Monday, also introduced new capabilities for the Grok iOS and web apps, making the AI more powerful and accessible.

Grok represents xAI’s answer to prominent AI models, including OpenAI’s GPT-4o and Google’s Gemini. It possesses the capability to analyze images, respond to intricate inquiries, and is thoroughly integrated into Musk’s social media platform, X.

The development of Grok 3 has been ongoing for several months, with an initial launch anticipated in 2024. However, delays have postponed its release, announcing on Monday a pivotal event for xAI.

In the creation of Grok 3, xAI utilized a substantial data center located in Memphis, equipped with approximately 200,000 GPUs. Musk asserts that Grok 3 was trained with tenfold the computational power of its predecessor, Grok 2, utilizing an expanded dataset that encompasses court case filings and various additional information sources.

“Grok 3 is significantly more capable than Grok 2,” Musk remarked during a live-streamed presentation. “It is an AI that seeks the truth to the utmost extent, even when that truth may conflict with prevailing political correctness.”

New Features and Improved Reasoning

Grok 3 represents a collection of models rather than a singular entity. Among these, Grok 3 Mini offers quicker response times at the expense of some precision. While certain features of Grok 3 remain in beta testing, xAI has commenced its gradual release.

xAI asserts that Grok 3 surpasses GPT-4o in several critical benchmarks, such as AIME, which assesses AI capabilities in solving mathematical problems, and GPQA, which challenges models with advanced scientific inquiries. Initial evaluations indicate that Grok 3 performs competitively on Chatbot Arena, a platform where users evaluate AI model outputs.

Within the Grok 3 suite, two models—Grok 3 Reasoning and Grok 3 Mini Reasoning—are tailored for intricate problem-solving tasks. These models are designed to verify their responses before delivering answers, thereby minimizing inaccuracies. This methodology is akin to other reasoning models, including OpenAI’s o3-mini and DeepSeek’s R1.

xAI contends that Grok 3 Reasoning exceeds the performance of OpenAI’s o3-mini-high across various benchmarks, including the most recent AIME 2025 mathematics assessment. Users can access these reasoning models via the Grok app, which features a “Think” mode for in-depth analysis and a “Big Brain” mode for advanced reasoning, necessitating additional computational resources.

To safeguard its technology from imitation, xAI has obscured certain aspects of the reasoning models’ cognitive processes within the Grok app. This strategy aims to thwart distillation, a method employed by competing AI developers to extract insights from established models. Recently, DeepSeek, a Chinese AI firm, faced allegations of utilizing this technique to create its models.

Subscription and Availability

The recent updates to Grok feature the introduction of DeepSearch, an innovative tool aimed at enhancing AI-driven research capabilities. DeepSearch conducts comprehensive scans of the internet and X to distill information and deliver in-depth insights. This advancement positions Grok 3 as a formidable competitor to OpenAI’s sophisticated research instruments.

Initially, Grok 3 is accessible to Premium+ subscribers of X, who are charged a monthly fee of US$50. Furthermore, xAI is set to unveil a new subscription level named SuperGrok. Based on leaked information, SuperGrok will be available for US$30 per month or US$300 annually, providing users with additional reasoning queries, access to DeepSearch, and unlimited AI-generated images.

With the introduction of Grok 3, xAI is advancing its position in the competitive AI landscape, striving to match the capabilities of industry frontrunners by delivering enhanced reasoning functions and innovative research tools. As the field of AI continues to progress, Grok 3 represents a pivotal development in Musk’s ambition to establish a truth-seeking artificial intelligence.
