Google has revealed plans to start replacing Google Assistant with Gemini on Android devices later this year. This transition will occur gradually over the next few months, after which Assistant will be phased out on most mobile devices and will no longer be available in app stores.
In a blog post, the company clarified that this change will not be limited to smartphones. Gemini will also be introduced on tablets, in-car systems, smartwatches, headphones, and various other connected devices. Furthermore, Google intends to enhance home devices like smart speakers, displays, and TVs with a new Gemini-powered experience.
For now, Google Assistant will remain functional on supported devices until the transition is fully completed. Meanwhile, Google is actively improving Gemini by incorporating features that users previously depended on Assistant for, such as playing music, setting timers, and executing actions directly from the lock screen—capabilities that have been highly requested by Android users.
Pixel 9 Signaled the Shift
This shift was anticipated, as earlier this year, Google launched its Pixel 9 series with Gemini as the default assistant. The company has been promoting Gemini as a more advanced alternative, boasting enhanced AI capabilities and features like Gemini Live and Deep Research, which aim to provide a more engaging and informative user experience.
According to Google, Gemini offers a smarter and more adaptable approach to managing tasks and accessing information. The platform leverages generative AI to handle more complex queries and actions, delivering a more sophisticated digital assistant experience across all devices.
While a specific date for the transition has not been announced, the company promises to provide more updates to users in the upcoming months.
