Google has revealed that AI Overviews in the United States are now enhanced by Gemini 2.0, which is expected to deliver quicker and more accurate responses for intricate inquiries, such as coding, advanced mathematics, and multimodal searches. The company claims that more than a billion individuals are “utilizing” AI Overviews; however, this figure is attributed to the feature’s automatic integration into search rather than voluntary usage.
Users previously had the option to bypass AI Overviews by conducting searches while not logged into their Google accounts. However, Google has now extended the availability of AI Overviews to teenagers and users who are not signed in, thereby eliminating this workaround. As a result, a greater number of users will be compelled to engage with AI Overviews, regardless of their preferences.
AI Mode
Google is launching AI Mode, an optional feature accessible via Search Labs. This mode enhances the existing AI Overviews by incorporating advanced reasoning, comparative analysis, and multimodal functionalities. The newly positioned leftmost search tab enables users to pose intricate questions, seek clarifications on responses, and obtain “helpful web links”—at least for the time being.
AI Mode employs a tailored iteration of Gemini 2.0, which Google promotes as particularly suitable for inquiries necessitating in-depth analysis. Nevertheless, users might have to conduct several searches to ensure the accuracy of the information, as Google recognizes the possibility of biases and responses influenced by personal opinions.
Future Updates and Testing
Google intends to improve AI responses by incorporating additional visuals, videos, and enhanced formatting. The initial users to experience AI Mode will be subscribers of Google One AI Premium, with a wider rollout anticipated in the future.
