People are using AI tools for almost everything today. Since the launch of ChatGPT and Gemini, these tools have helped users in many ways. They generate text, audio, and videos. However, some use them to spread false information. To fight this, Google created a new tool called SynthID Detector. It identifies content made with Google’s AI tools, including images, videos, audio, and text. As AI improves, tools like this are essential to tell what is real and what is AI-generated.
Google SynthID Detector
SynthID is Google’s watermarking system. It places invisible marks on content created by AI. Detection tools can find these marks, even though they are not visible. The marks stay on the content even when it is shared, changed, or compressed. The goal is to stop fake content and false rumors from spreading.
At first, SynthID only worked for images. Now, it also supports AI-produced text, audio, and videos. Content from Google’s Gemini, Imagen, Lyria, and Veo AI models can be watermarked using SynthID. Over 10 billion items have already been marked.
How Does the Detector Work?
Using the SynthID Detector is straightforward. Upload an AI-generated image, video, audio, or text. The tool scans it for a watermark. If it finds one, it highlights the marked parts.
For audio, it shows the exact segments with watermarks. For images, it points out the areas most likely marked. This helps users see which parts are probably AI-made.
Who Can Use It?
The SynthID Detector is currently available for early testers. Journalists, researchers, and media workers can sign up on a waitlist for access. Google plans to make it available to everyone soon.
Growing the SynthID Ecosystem
To support developers, Google has made SynthID’s text watermarking open-source. This allows others to use it in their own AI tools. The aim is to build a safer and more honest internet.
Google is also working with partners like NVIDIA. Videos created with NVIDIA’s Cosmos AI now include SynthID watermarks. This expands the use of SynthID beyond Google tools.
Google has teamed up with GetReal Security. They are leaders in content verification. This helps others detect SynthID watermarks, promoting transparency online.
Why It Matters
As AI-generated content becomes common, trust becomes critical. People need ways to verify what is real. Tools like the SynthID Detector help provide that assurance. Google supports working with others to make AI safer and more transparent.
