Google might soon introduce a desktop mode for Android phones. This feature is similar to Samsung DeX and Motorola Smart Connect. It aims to give smartphones a PC-like experience. A recent leak from Android’s source code hints that the feature is still in development and getting close to a public release.
This idea isn’t entirely new. Android’s desktop mode was first hinted at in 2023. Now, it looks like Google is working hard to improve it. Reports say the interface still needs some polishing, so it isn’t ready to launch yet.
Most expect this desktop mode won’t arrive with Android 16. Instead, it’s likely to debut with Android 17, probably alongside the next Pixel phones. Google might test it first on Pixel devices before sharing it with other brands.
The leaked code calls the feature “Android Desktop Mode.” It should include tools like resizable windows for multiple apps. This makes multitasking similar to using a desktop computer. The design will also feature familiar desktop-style controls, like taskbars, app switching, and simple app management—similar to Windows or Chrome OS.
One attractive part of this mode is the easy switch between mobile and desktop views. Users will connect their phone to a monitor with a USB-C cable. Wireless support for the feature may come later. Brands like Samsung and Motorola already have wireless desktop modes, so Google could add that option too.
This feature could be handy for people who want to use their phones like small computers. It may help with work, giving presentations, or multitasking on a bigger screen. If it works well, it could reduce the need to carry a laptop for simple tasks.
Right now, the desktop mode is still being tested. There’s no official launch date yet. Still, because it’s being refined in internal builds, we might see it announced in 2025.
In short, Google is moving closer to a feature many Android phones already have. Desktop Mode in Android could boost productivity. It shows how phones are becoming more flexible and powerful. Phones and computers are starting to blend. Keep an eye out for Android 17, as that’s probably when this feature will appear.
