Google appears to be investigating methods to enhance communication by incorporating third-party video calling capabilities directly into its Messages application.
According to a recent report from Android Authority, the company is currently testing a feature that enables users to start WhatsApp video calls without exiting the messaging platform.
Assemble Debug from Android Authority successfully enabled and evaluated the feature while conducting an APK teardown of Google Messages version 20250131. The procedure appears to be quite simple.

If both users possess WhatsApp installed and properly configured, selecting the video call button in Google Messages will commence a WhatsApp call. If the recipient does not have WhatsApp, the call will probably revert to Google Meet.
Currently, this feature appears to be restricted to private chats; however, the report indicates that it is expected to expand to group conversations upon the release of the stable version.
At present, when a video call is initiated in Google Messages, it automatically defaults to Google Meet. This necessitates that both participants have the Meet application installed, are logged into their Google accounts on both Messages and Meet and possess a phone number that is compatible with LTE-based calling. Although this arrangement is operational, it may not always provide the most seamless experience, especially considering the prevalent use of alternative video-calling applications.
Google is currently conducting tests on the integration of WhatsApp; however, there is no official announcement regarding the timeline for its potential rollout. Likely, Google will first implement this feature in beta versions to collect user feedback before a wider release.
The specific criteria for WhatsApp to be designated as the default video calling option remain uncertain. It is yet to be determined whether users will have the ability to select between WhatsApp and Google Meet before initiating a call, as Google has not provided clarification on this matter.
In addition to video calls, it would be beneficial for Google to extend this integration to encompass standard internet voice calls, rather than limiting it solely to video communication.
