The upcoming Apple iPhone 17 Series has been a topic of discussion for some time. Recent reports indicate that the entire lineup, which includes the new iPhone 17 Air, will incorporate Samsung’s latest M14 OLED panels.
Interestingly, this advanced display technology is not included in Samsung’s most recent flagship offerings for 2025, specifically the Galaxy S25 series.
What’s Special About the M14 OLED?
The M14 OLED represents Samsung’s most advanced display technology, reportedly achieving a brightness increase of 20-30% compared to the earlier M13 panel found in the Galaxy S24 series. The Galaxy S25 Ultra features an enhanced version known as M13+, although it still falls short of the capabilities expected in the forthcoming iPhone 17 models.
For Apple, this marks a notable transition. The M14 was initially exclusive to the Pro models within the iPhone 16 series. By extending the M14 to the entire iPhone 17 range, Apple is effectively bridging the divide between its standard and Pro offerings, thereby providing a more premium experience across all models. However, it remains uncertain whether the previously speculated 120Hz refresh rate for the non-Pro models will materialize.
While the Galaxy S25 series features AI ProScaler technology to improve the display experience, it cannot entirely offset the hardware disparity resulting from the absence of the M14. Conversely, this strategy may assist Samsung’s mobile division in reducing costs, while Samsung Display gains from supplying the more costly M14 panels to Apple.
