Unlike Android flagship users, Apple enthusiasts have been eagerly anticipating the arrival of 8K video recording. Although the iPhone 16 series maxed out at 4K, a trustworthy source now suggests that the upcoming iPhone 17 lineup, particularly the Pro models, will introduce 8K recording in iPhones. This enhancement could represent a significant change in Apple’s strategy for smartphone videography.
Support for 8K Recording Suggests the iPhone 17 Pro models will include a High-Resolution Telephoto
At present, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus can record video in 4K at up to 60 frames per second, while the Pro and Pro Max models can achieve up to 120 frames per second. There are rumors that Apple had the capability for 8K recording in the iPhone 16 but decided against it due to the telephoto sensor’s low resolution. With only 12MP, the sensor does not meet the approximately 33MP needed for 8K video.

According to industry insiders, Apple abandoned this feature last year to ensure a smooth recording experience across various lenses. The idea of shooting in 8K but being unable to switch to the telephoto lens during a shot is something Apple wanted to avoid, unlike many Android devices. For the iPhone 17 to support 8K, a more powerful telephoto sensor is likely in development, which would allow all lenses to work together for ultra-high-definition video.

This would represent a rare moment of Apple catching up, as it has been behind Android manufacturers that have showcased 8K capabilities for years. It also responds to the increasing demands from creators who want more from iPhone cameras, even if some may find it amusing that Apple is making this shift after years of emphasizing “quality over specs.” If the rumors are accurate, the iPhone 17 series could transform mobile videography for Apple users, combining its signature refinement with ultra-high resolution. While details are still limited, an enhanced sensor could finally enable iPhones to record in 8K without the awkward limitations that have affected many Android devices.
