NCERT Issues Urgent Social Media Safety Alert: 66.9 Million Users at Risk

The National Computer Emergency Response Team (nCERT) has issued a detailed warning to users in Pakistan about the growing dangers of social media. Their advice, titled “Safe, Diligent, and Responsible Usage of Social Media,” points out many online threats that take advantage of users’ trust and limited awareness.

Over a Quarter of Pakistanis Now Online

By January 2025, over 66.9 million individuals in Pakistan will actively use platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp, and YouTube. This figure, covering about 26.4% of the entire population, calls for immediate guidance at the national level.

The advisory highlights misinformation, disinformation, and online propaganda as some of the top threats. These false or misleading messages can damage public trust, spread panic, and create societal divisions. In democratic systems, they may even influence election results. nCERT warns that false information spreads faster than facts, especially when it stirs strong emotions. Users should be cautious of viral trends, particularly during political or national crises.

Scams, Cyberbullying, and Blackmail On the Rise

Online scams and frauds are also rising. Cybercriminals use fake links, scam offers, and impersonation to steal money or personal details. Women and children are often targeted with cyberbullying, grooming, or identity theft. Such crimes can cause lasting mental harm and may lead to private photos being shared publicly via blackmail or doxxing. The warning emphasizes that these issues affect not only individuals but also reveal deeper weaknesses in society.

How to Stay Safe Online

The advisory stresses that prevention begins with good digital habits and responsible online conduct. It advises creating strong, unique passwords, turning on multi-factor authentication, turning off location services, and keeping devices updated. Users should take screenshots of suspicious activity as evidence and adjust privacy settings to control who sees their content. Emotional manipulation through algorithms and endless scrolling is linked to declining mental health, especially among young people.

Report to Official Authorities

The advice encourages reporting cyber incidents to official agencies like FIA-NCCIA, PTA, and nCERT. Citizens must question suspicious content, think before posting, and protect personal data. Small but consistent steps can make online spaces safer and more trustworthy.
