Pakistanis Used 28 Billion GBs of Internet in FY2024-25

Pakistan’s broadband data use in the telecom sector has reached record highs. In the fiscal year 2025, about 27,897 petabytes of data were consumed through mobile and fixed broadband services. This sharp increase in data usage demonstrates the extent to which society relies on digital connections. It also emphasizes the need for ongoing investment in broadband infrastructure.

Both the government and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) recognize the vital role of broadband for economic growth and digital inclusion. Expanding broadband is a key part of the ‘Digital Pakistan’ plan. It is viewed as essential for modernizing the economy, enhancing public services, and providing nationwide access to digital tools.

Pakistan’s broadband system changed significantly after 2014, when 3G and 4G services were introduced. The PTA has led efforts like spectrum auctions, renewals, and additional rollout requirements for telecom companies. These actions encouraged more users to adopt 4G and prepared the way for better upgrades.

The impact of these efforts is visible in the sharp rise in broadband subscriptions. From 2018 to March 2025, the total number of subscriptions grew by 151%. During this period, subscriptions increased from 58.7 million to 147.2 million. Both mobile and fixed broadband users contributed to this growth, showing higher demand for fast internet in cities and rural areas alike.
