The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has begun issuing licenses to Virtual Private Network (VPN) service providers under the Class License for Data Services in Pakistan. So far, three VPN companies have received these Class licenses.
In a recent press release, the PTA urged all VPN service providers operating without a license to quickly secure the necessary Class License to comply with the current regulatory standards. Obtaining the license on time will help avoid potential service interruptions and ensure that customers maintain uninterrupted access.
PTA Grants VPN Licenses to Tackle Internet Slowdown in Pakistan
Those interested in applying can find comprehensive information, including eligibility criteria and application procedures, on the PTA’s official website at www.pta.gov.pk.
Following the ban on X (formerly known as Twitter), the use of VPNs in Pakistan has surged significantly.
Since then, Pakistan has been experiencing issues with internet slowdowns. The PTA has indicated that the high volume of VPN usage is a key factor contributing to this slowdown, as it has increased the strain on the country’s bandwidth, leading to reduced internet speeds. The PTA has also reported this situation to the Ministry of IT, emphasizing the urgent need to boost bandwidth to accommodate rising internet demands.
The government should implement several measures to address the pressing need for faster internet. Firstly, enhancing bandwidth is crucial to meet the increasing demand. Additionally, upgrading existing networks to support higher bandwidth and adopting advanced technologies like 5G are essential.
Improving spectrum management is also necessary. Telecom operators should offer affordable data packages to ensure widespread and inclusive internet access. Finally, promoting digital literacy programs and policies encouraging local content creation can help foster a more sustainable and efficient digital environment.
