The Punjab government has expanded its free Wi-Fi service by increasing the number of hotspots across the province and upgrading to Wi-Fi 6 technology, which offers faster and more internet access.
In Lahore, the number of Wi-Fi hotspots has increased from 200 to 230, ensuring better coverage. The Safe Cities Authority is currently offering free internet access at 300 locations across 11 districts, which include Kasur, Nankana Sahib, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Gujrat, Jhelum, and Attock.
This service is also available at important locations in Sahiwal, Okara, and Murree, with plans for further growth. According to officials report more than 17.7 million users have taken advantage of the free Wi-Fi, consuming a total of 438 terabytes of data.
It’s important to note that this service is primarily intended for emergencies and does not allow for video streaming or entertainment. In addition, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced plans to integrate digital technology into education, launching smart classrooms and digital labs in government schools.
She stressed the importance of IT education, promoting courses in artificial intelligence, software development, and freelancing to prepare students with modern skills.
