Samsung’s Thinnest Flagship Ever Comes With Two Major Caveats

Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy S25 Edge, its new flagship phone aimed at rivaling the upcoming iPhone 17 Air. The main feature is its super slim design, which comes with some trade-offs. It uses premium materials and a high-resolution camera, but some specs may fall short for a device in this price range.

Design and Display

The Galaxy S25 Edge measures just 5.8 mm thick and weighs 163 grams. Its titanium frame adds strength, and it is rated IP68 for water and dust resistance. The 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen supports QHD+ resolution and has an adaptive refresh rate between 1 and 120 Hz. The screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2.

While the display offers top-tier specs, the focus on keeping the phone thin raises questions about its durability and how well it handles heat during long use. The phone comes in three colors: Titanium Icyblue, Titanium Silver, and Titanium Black.

Internals and Software

Inside, Samsung installed the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy chip, paired with 12GB of RAM. Storage options are 256GB or 512GB, but there’s no way to add more storage. The device runs Android 15 with One UI 7.

Even with powerful hardware, the lack of a microSD slot and no headphone jack may upset some users. This is common in high-end phones today, but it can be frustrating for those who want more choices.

Cameras

The main camera is a 200 MP sensor with an f/1.7 aperture and optical image stabilization. Samsung claims you can get 2x optical zoom from the main lens, but it doesn’t have a dedicated telephoto lens. This makes zooming less flexible. The secondary lens is 12 MP ultrawide with autofocus, good for macro shots. There’s also a 12 MP front camera for selfies.

Missing a proper telephoto lens is a surprise. Lower-cost phones often have more lenses, giving more options. Relying on digital zoom means less quality, especially in tough lighting conditions.

Battery and Pricing

To keep the phone slim, Samsung used a small 3,900 mAh battery. This is enough for light use but falls behind other flagships that have 5,000 mAh or more. Charging is limited to 25W via USB-C. It can reach about 55% in 30 minutes with a Samsung charger sold separately. Wireless charging is available but details on speed are not provided.

For $1,099, the small battery and slow charging are hard to accept. Many competitors offer faster charging and bigger batteries for less or similar money. Since newer battery tech like silicon carbon batteries is available, compact size shouldn’t mean smaller batteries.
