In 2023, Tecno introduced an innovative imaging technology known as Universal Tone, aimed at improving the accuracy of skin tones in photographs, thereby ensuring a more natural representation of individuals across all complexions.
Since that time, the company has collaborated with academic institutions to enhance this technology and has also introduced a web portal that allows users to determine their authentic skin tone with a single click.
Currently, Tecno is advancing its efforts further. The company has announced an enhanced version of Universal Tone, which broadens its skin tone database and refines its Multi-Skin Tone Color Restoration Engine, resulting in even more precise color reproduction.
What’s new in Tecno Universal Tone?
The recent enhancement to Universal Tone introduces a more sophisticated Multi-Skin Tone color card, now comprising 372 patches, an increase from the 268 available in the prior version.
This advancement signifies that Universal Tone is equipped with a broader range of skin tone data, ensuring that photographs capture skin tones in a manner that appears more natural and lifelike.
While the updated dataset caters to a global audience, Tecno has also created a specialized regional color card tailored for Saudi Arabia.
Collaboratively developed with the University of Leeds (UK) and Dar Al-Hekma University (Saudi Arabia) in late 2024, this custom color card includes 187 distinct Saudi skin tone patches, enhancing the representation of the country’s diverse skin tones.

In addition to the expanded dataset, Tecno has refined its Multi-Skin Tone Color Restoration Engine, incorporating an enhanced CCM Skin Tone Calibration Algorithm and an upgraded Spectrum-Based Automatic White Balance (AWB) Algorithm.
The CCM algorithm, now trained with the new Multi-Skin Tone color card dataset, aims for greater precision in color calibration. Simultaneously, the AWB Algorithm addresses color shift challenges in monochromatic photography, improving exposure and white balance when capturing various skin tones within a single frame.

Collectively, these enhancements are reported to increase skin tone accuracy by over 50%, positioning Universal Tone as Tecno’s most advanced model for skin tone aesthetics.
The new and updated Universal Tone will make its debut in the upcoming Tecno Camon 40 series set to launch at MWC 2025.
