The Galaxy S26 Ultra Could Bring Back Variable Aperture

Samsung has a track record of launching cutting-edge features in its smartphones, only to phase them out later. However, the variable aperture feature may be making a return with the upcoming Galaxy S26 Ultra.

Renowned leaker Ice Universe has reported that Samsung is contemplating the inclusion of a variable aperture system in the main camera of the S26 Ultra. For those who may not know, this feature adjusts the amount of light entering the camera based on the surrounding conditions, ensuring optimal image quality. Additionally, it allows users to control background blur, while brightness can be fine-tuned by adjusting the ISO settings. This feature would provide users with added flexibility, enhancing their photography experience in various situations.

Is Samsung Finally Prioritizing Innovation Again?

The Galaxy S9 and S9+ were among the pioneers in smartphone technology, featuring a unique capability that allowed the main camera to switch between two aperture settings: f/1.5 and f/2.4. The f/1.5 option was perfect for low-light environments, enabling the sensor to capture more light for brighter, clearer images with less noise. Conversely, the f/2.4 aperture was ideal for well-lit situations, providing a broader depth of field. This setting is particularly useful for close-up shots of larger subjects, ensuring that the entire object remains in focus.

While this innovative variable aperture feature continued with the Galaxy S10 series, Samsung decided to eliminate it starting with the Galaxy S20 series.

In the meantime, Huawei has embraced and enhanced this technology. For example, the Mate 50 Pro can adjust its aperture from f/1.4 to f/4.0, offering a total of 10 stops of flexibility.

Currently, there are rumors that Samsung may bring back this feature with the upcoming Galaxy S26 Ultra. However, it’s still uncertain whether it will be a genuine variable aperture system with multiple settings or a dual-aperture design similar to that of the Galaxy S9.

Beyond camera enhancements, the Galaxy S26 Ultra is also expected to showcase several improvements in other aspects. It is rumored to feature a 50MP sensor for its 3x zoom telephoto camera, building on the 50MP telephoto and ultrawide cameras that debuted in the Galaxy S24 Ultra and S25 Ultra, respectively.
