This Device Can Turn Your Dreams Into AI Movies by Just Speaking

AI videos created by machines often look strange, with objects and scenes that change and shift into weird, dream-like worlds. This unpredictable look is what the Dream Recorder AI device aims to capture, promising to turn your dreams into trippy videos powered by AI.

Dream Recorder is developed by Modem Works, a Dutch studio known for open-source projects. Their work often combines art and hardware, creating unique tools. This device can visualize your dreams by listening to you describe them. It understands any language and doesn’t need detailed instructions to work well.

Your spoken words are then sent to ChatGPT, which sorts your thoughts into a clear story from your subconscious. That story is passed on to Luma AI, which turns it into surreal, dream-like videos. The visuals they produce are intentionally fuzzy and simple, mimicking how dreams are remembered—more by feelings and vague images than details.

Your dreams are saved locally on the device, like a personal dream journal stored on your own. You can look at them anytime you want. The device works on its own, with no need for a phone, app, or internet connection. Built using open-source software, it runs offline and gives you full control of your data.

Here is what it looks like.

Modem shared its latest project on X, describing the device as something that quietly sits on your nightstand, softly glowing like a modern dream catcher. The software is free and customizable, and users can even 3D print the entire device at home.

They have posted the parts and their costs if you want to make your own Dream Recorder. The total price of materials is about €285 from Amazon, not counting shipping or taxes. The AI cost for generating one dream is about $0.15—$0.01 for the text-to-speech from ChatGPT, and $0.14 for the dream creation from LumaLabs.

All of this can be found on their GitHub page.
