President Donald Trump has granted a 90-day extension for TikTok to keep operating in the United States. This gives the app extra time as efforts to sell it are still underway.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed Tuesday that Trump will sign an executive order to extend TikTok’s deadline to sell its U.S. business. This is the third extension since Trump became president in January.
Trump Doesn’t Want TikTok to “Go Dark”
“As he has said many times, President Trump does not want TikTok to go dark,” Leavitt stated, according to CNN. She added that the administration will use the 90 days to work toward closing a deal that ensures the security of American user data.
While discussions continue behind the scenes, no concrete updates have emerged since the last extension in April. Some US-based investors are reportedly interested in acquiring TikTok’s American operations, but any agreement would require approval from Chinese regulators.
New US-Based Entity for TikTok?
Previous reports suggested that U.S. investors might combine their stakes into a new American company. These talks slowed after Trump introduced tariffs on Chinese imports. This made the process more complicated.
The U.S. government wants TikTok sold because of concerns over privacy and security. ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company in China, has faced scrutiny over how it handles data. This has increased pressure to either ban the app or bring it under American control.
