Xiaomi 17 Pro Series With Dual Screens Teaches Apple What a 2025 Flagship Phone Should Be?

Xiaomi has officially introduced its latest flagship smartphones, the Xiaomi 17 Pro and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max, in China. These models shine with strong hardware but also for their innovative rear-mounted secondary displays, designed to unlock creative use cases such as main-camera selfies, quick notifications, and even retro gaming.

Design and Display

The Xiaomi 17 Pro features a 2.7-inch secondary screen with a resolution of 904 × 572 pixels, a 120Hz refresh rate, and peak brightness of 3,500 nits. Positioned alongside the main camera module, this screen allows users to take selfies with the rear cameras, control music, check notifications, handle calls, and set timers.

It also supports wallpapers and can transform into a compact gaming console with the retro case accessory. On the front, the device carries a 6.3-inch LTPO panel with an adaptive 1–120Hz refresh rate and the same 3,500-nit peak brightness, protected by Xiaomi Dragon Crystal Glass.

The larger Xiaomi 17 Pro Max is equipped with a 6.9-inch LTPO display capable of displaying 12-bit colors at up to 3,500 nits brightness. Its secondary display measures 2.9 inches with a resolution of 976 × 596 pixels. Both models are rated IP68 for water and dust resistance. The smaller Pro is certified to withstand depths of up to four meters in fresh water, while the Pro Max can endure immersion up to six meters.

In terms of design, Xiaomi offers both devices in a range of finishes. The Xiaomi 17 Pro is available in Black, White, Green, and Purple, while the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max is offered in Black, White, Purple, and Green. These polished color variants complement the modern dual-display design, giving users a choice between understated and vibrant aesthetics.

Internals and Software

Both smartphones are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, which was announced yesterday. The Xiaomi 17 Pro offers memory configurations of 12GB or 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM, paired with storage options ranging from 256GB to 1TB of UFS 4.1. The Pro Max comes with the same RAM options but begins at 512GB of storage, with an additional 1TB variant available.

Cooling is handled by advanced vapor chamber systems. The 17 Pro uses a 4,637mm² chamber, while the Pro Max, due to its larger size, employs a 5,533mm² system.

Camera

Photography remains a central focus of Xiaomi’s flagship strategy, and both devices feature a triple-camera setup co-engineered with Leica. The main camera uses a 50-megapixel Light Fusion 950L sensor measuring 1/1.28 inches, combined with an f/1.67 Summilux lens and optical image stabilization. The ultra-wide camera also employs a 50-megapixel sensor with a 102-degree field of view. The front-facing camera is a 50-megapixel sensor with a 90-degree field of view.

The two models differ in their telephoto solutions. The Xiaomi 17 Pro uses a periscope module with a 50-megapixel sensor, a 5x optical zoom lens with f/3.0 aperture, and macro capabilities at a close distance of 20 centimeters. The Pro Max reworks the prism arrangement to accommodate a larger 1/2-inch ISOCELL GN8 sensor behind its 5x lens. This lens offers a brighter f/2.6 aperture, though the tele-macro function requires a 30-centimeter distance. Both models also include a 3D Time-of-Flight sensor for additional depth data.

Battery and Pricing

Battery technology is another defining aspect of the new series. The Xiaomi 17 Pro, despite its compact size, carries a 6,300mAh cell. The Pro Max increases the capacity to 7,500mAh, making it one of the largest batteries currently available in a flagship device. Both smartphones support 100W wired charging, 50W wireless charging, and 22.5W reverse charging in both wired and wireless modes.

In terms of pricing, the Xiaomi 17 Pro begins at $700 for the 12GB RAM and 256GB storage model, rising to $840 for the 16GB RAM and 1TB storage option. The Xiaomi 17 Pro Max starts at $840  for the 12GB RAM and 512GB storage configuration, with the highest tier, featuring 16GB RAM and 1TB storage, priced at $980.
