X, formerly known as Twitter, is testing its new messaging feature called XChat with select users. This limited test appears to be aimed at beta testers who subscribe to the platform’s premium service, based on multiple user reports and independent sources.
Public testing has now started, and the feature may soon be available to everyone. However, there is no official word yet on the full rollout date.
A Replacement for Traditional DMs
XChat is meant to replace the current direct messaging system, which has not changed much since Elon Musk bought the platform. The new system promises more features, fitting Musk’s plan to add a secure messaging option similar to Signal within X.
Reported Features
While full details are not yet available, reverse engineer Nima Owji shared screenshots and clues suggesting XChat will include group chats, end-to-end encryption, disappearing messages, file sharing, and the ability to mark messages as unread. Users will also need a four-digit passcode to access their messages, adding extra security.
Encryption Rollout Suspended
On Thursday, the company confirmed it had paused development on its existing encrypted DMs. This likely indicates a switch to XChat. Since 2023, premium users have had limited encryption options, but XChat could replace that system soon.
Elon Musk has talked about making X a platform with messaging, payments, and more. If XChat is released widely, it would be a major step toward that plan. It would give users a secure, feature-packed chat option built into the platform.
