WhatsApp is developing a document scanning feature for Android phones, as shown in its latest beta update, version 2.25.18.29, available through the Google Play Beta Program. The feature is still in progress but should be included in a future version of the app.
This scan feature was first released to iOS users earlier this year, letting them scan and send documents directly in chats. The Android version looks to be the same, giving users a way to scan documents with their phone’s camera without needing third-party apps.
This change means you won’t need apps like CamScanner anymore to scan and share documents.

Two Modes: Manual and Automatic
In the update, WhatsApp hints at a new “Scan document” option within the file-sharing menu. When selected, the camera opens with two scan modes: manual and automatic. Manual mode lets you control when to snap the shot, so you can frame the document carefully. Automatic mode detects the edges of the document and takes the picture on its own, saving time.
Converts to PDF Automatically
Once you capture the document, WhatsApp automatically converts it into a PDF, ready to send in chats or groups. The process uses Android’s built-in APIs, so everything works directly on your device. The files are only shared if you choose to send them, and they stay protected with end-to-end encryption.
Availability
The feature hasn’t been released for testing to the public yet, but WhatsApp has confirmed it is in development. The company plans to introduce it in a future update, with more details coming soon.
