YouTube CEO Neal Mohan announced that Google’s Veo 3 AI video generation model will be integrated into YouTube Shorts later this summer, marking a major upgrade for content creators on the platform.
Shorts Grew 186% Over Last Year
YouTube Shorts has seen a significant rise in engagement over the past year. While YouTube remains the most watched video platform globally, Shorts has outpaced even its parent platform in growth. According to Mohan, Shorts now average 200 billion daily views, up 186% year-over-year.

What Veo 3 Brings to Shorts?
Currently, YouTube offers creators limited AI capabilities such as Dream Screen, which generates background visuals using text prompts. The addition of Veo 3, Google’s most advanced video model, will allow creators to generate entire short-form videos from text or image prompts.
However, Veo 3 in its current form produces landscape videos in 720p resolution, which doesn’t match the vertical format of YouTube Shorts. Mohan did not confirm whether a portrait-output version of the model is in development, but such a move would likely be necessary for seamless integration.
Access and Costs
As of now, Veo 3 access is limited to users on Google’s $250 AI Ultra plan, which provides only 125 eight-second videos per month. Mohan did not clarify whether the integration with YouTube Shorts will be free for creators or follow a similar premium pricing structure.
Either way, more should be revealed soon as Google rolls out Veo 3 access to YouTube Shorts. Since it is happening “later this summer”, it should not be long before we get more answers.
